Mount Holyoke professor reacts to Biden’s withdrawal from election

Following President Joseph Biden’s announcement ending his reelection campaign, Associate Professor Adam Hilton told MassLive that Vice President Kamala Harris is the most likely Democratic nominee.

With President Joseph Biden , the Democratic Party now faces the task of finding a new 2024 presidential nominee.

Although Biden has Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison has stated that there will be no for his replacement. Still, Adam Hilton, associate professor of politics at , told MassLive that Harris is the most likely candidate to ensure a smooth transition.

Hilton suggested California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as other potential candidates, but they would more likely be considered as contenders for vice president.

“There is a world where I could see Harris sidelined, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in that,” Hilton said. “Should it happen, it could be a road to chaos.”

Hilton also spoke with the Daily Hampshire Gazette and advised Democrats at the national level “shift the conversation away from their internal party chaos” as the race remains a particularly close one.
